The story of “Big Brother” can be traced back to Nineteen Eighty Four (1984) by George Orwell.
The show was first launched in the Netherlands. In 1997, the British version of Big Brother, the international reality television franchise was formed by John de Mol.
The show comprises of a number of contestants, known as housemates. They are isolated from the outside world for an extended perpiod of time in a custom built house.
BBNaija is a direct adaptation of Big Brother Africa which lasted 9 season before going off air. First launched in Nigeria in 2006 as Big Brother Nigeria with the edition comprising of 14 housemates. Katung Aduwak emerged as the winner of $100,000 prize money with Francisca, Ify and Sandy being the runner-ups accordingly.
In BBNaija, there are 12 contestants living in an isolated house, competing for a large cash prize at the end of the show by avoiding being evicted by viewers.
The first season of BBNaija show was first aired on DStv Channel 37 from March 5 – June 4, 2006. Voting results of the show are verified by the auditing company of Alexander-Forbes.
The Season 2 of the reality show BBNaija (See Gobe) came On Air in 2017, more than 10 years after the first edition. It saw Efe Ejaba as the winner. Beating fourteen other housemates, also two fake housemates to win the coveted 25 Million Naira and a brand new SUV. Bishola and T-boss came out as runner ups.

BBNaija Third Edition (Double Wahala) came on air in January 2018 featuring 20 housemates. The show lasted 85 days with Miracle Igbokwe from Imo State emerging as the winner. Cee-C and Tobi, were the runners up. The edition brought about history as over 170 million votes were recorded in the platforms.
Objectives Of BBNaija Show
Big Brother Naija or BBN or BBnaija show as u may like to call it is organized on the foundation of “reality”. Also a social experiment which aims to put together people of/from different backgrounds, culture and experiences. Living and working together with Unity in diversity as the major motivation of the show.
The “Big Brother” or “Biggie” is an invisible voice that is being represented by a big eye and is the presumed “owner” of the BBNaija house. It is being regarded as omni-present within the house.
However, the logo of Big Brother Naija has a big eye on it which signifies that he sees everything in the house. Therefore, Big Brother has the powers to make laws in the house. Deciding the general daily administration of the house. And also adding of unexpected twists to spice up the fun.
All through the period of the show, the contestants are referred to as “Housemates”.
And the housemates are thereby allowed and encouraged to live their “normal lives”. Being free to do anything as long as it doesn’t contravene the house rules.
They stay in the Big Brother House without any form of contact from the outside world.
Housemates are however not allowed to carry electronic gadgets into the house. And the official language allowed for communication is English. Vernacular usage or any “coded” means of communication is prohibited in the house, except where necessary.
Where Is BBNaija Hosted? | How Long Does The BBNaija Show Last?
BBNaija show is hosted in South Africa. Though the audition exercises are being held in regional locations across Nigeria.
The show lasts for approximately three (3) months, reviewed primarily in weeks and days. Showing exclusively on Multichoice-owned cable television, DSTV and GOTV.

There have been three successfully held editions of the BBNaija show so far.
